The Minister-Chief of the Institutional Relations Secretary (SRI) of the Presidency, Alexandre Padilha, assured that jobs for casual port workers will be maintained. He met with union leaders at the headquarters of the Port Authority of Santos (APS) on the morning of Friday (20). Earlier, Padilha visited Valongo Park and the Port of Santos Channel.
“These are very important workers who are part of the history of the city of Santos. They represent several families, and I reaffirmed to them the commitment of this Government to maintaining jobs, whether through new actions at the Port of Santos or new terminals, following two guidelines: the maintenance, expansion, and qualification of jobs while always analyzing the impacts on the City”, he stated at a press conference at APS.
“We will maintain a permanent dialogue with the workers”, said Padilha, emphasizing that this is a premise of the current Government. He also mentioned that, at the request of the union leaders, he will arrange a meeting for them with the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
During the occasion, APS President Anderson Pomini presented the minister with the investment plan for infrastructure works, involving investments of over R$ 12 billion. The minister highlighted the importance of the port asset for the country and the Santos-Guarujá tunnel. “The region is the largest hub of federal investments. There are R$ 12 billion in direct investment from Companhia Docas, involving the tunnel and the progress of this project that has been awaited for nearly 100 years. ”
Padilha also emphasized other structural works that, like the dry connection, are included in the Federal Government’s Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), such as the remodeling of the perimeter avenues on the Right and Left banks of the Port and the deepening dredging of the navigation channel.
“The dredging will place the Port of Santos on par with international requirements to accommodate larger cargo ships”, said Padilha.
The minister also recognized the tourism potential with the transfer of the Passenger Terminal to Valongo. “All the investment in Valongo will provide the city of Santos and the Baixada Santista with a new attraction for tourism. ”
After leaving the administrative headquarters of the Port of Santos, Padilha headed to the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) to learn about the space where the Sports Block of the Campus will be built.
Ecoporto, STS10, and jobs
When asked about potential job losses with the exit of the Ecoporto Santos terminal and the auction of STS10, Pomini assured that “this will not happen. We are studying and revisiting the format of STS10, as well as the possibility of renewing Ecoporto's contract, even with a future area transfer clause. Our role is to calibrate the growth of the Port with the maintenance of jobs, as we are interested in maintaining one operation and growing others. ”
