1º Encontro COP Portos, in Paraná, will discuss sustainable solutions

Sustainable and innovative solutions for ports will guide the discussions at the 1º Encontro COP Portos Sustentáveis, which will be promoted by Grupo Tribuna at the Port of Paranaguá, in Paraná, on July 15, starting at 2:00 p.m. The contributions will be compiled into a document to be presented at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), in November, in Belém, Pará.

This will be the first of three in-person meetings organized by COP Portos, a commission led by Grupo Tribuna and composed of representatives from both the public and private sectors.

The commission was formed in April and includes members from Grupo Tribuna, port authorities, the Brazilian Association of Port and Waterway Entities (Abeph), sector associations, and public institutions such as the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) and the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor).

The other two meetings will take place at the Port of Santos and another port in the Northeast region (yet to be defined), always held at port authority headquarters. The CEO of Portos do Paraná and president of Abeph, Luiz Fernando Garcia da Silva, will open the event.

“It is an honor to host the Encontro COP Portos Sustentáveis. Our company has actively participated in climate change discussions and is the only Brazilian port authority invited by the UN, for five consecutive years, to attend the COPs since 2019. I am certain that, together, Brazilian ports and port communities will present strong proposals in Belém during COP30”, he stated.

Following the opening, at 2:20 p.m., Maitê Carlim Moura, sustainability analyst at Rocha Terminais Portuários e Logística, will deliver the lecture: “From the dock to the community: The socio-environmental strength of the port sector.”

At 2:50 p.m., Ângela Cristina Bahry, ESG coordinator, and Gabriella Rodrigues Leal da Silva, Health, Safety, Environmental Protection, and Quality (SSPAQ) coordinator, both from Cattalini Terminais Marítimos, will present the lecture “Sustainable Initiatives.”

Next, Eliane de Oliveira, environmental coordinator at TCP, will speak on “The Role of Port Operators in Sustainable Development.”

In addition, the panel “COP30 – Climate Maritime Corridors: Innovation and Collective Action for Decarbonization. Resilience in the Port and Waterway Sector” will feature ten panelists from public and private companies, industry organizations, and legal experts.

For Demetrio Amono, Commercial Director at Grupo Tribuna, “this initiative is a result of Grupo Tribuna’s commitment to the sustainable development of the port sector. With COP30 approaching, we understand that the sector must take the lead and propose solutions that contribute to the global sustainability agenda.”

Amono emphasized that “with the support of Abeph, Antaq, and MPor, we will hold three meetings to gather regional contributions that will form part of the official document COP Portos will submit to the COP30 organizing committee. One of the sector's main challenges involves environmental licensing, and therefore, it is crucial to propose solutions that accelerate development without compromising sustainability.”

The event will be moderated by Maxwell Rodrigues, port affairs consultant for Grupo Tribuna. Registration is open.

COP30 COP30 will take place from November 10 to 21. This global event will address topics such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, climate change adaptation, financing for developing countries, renewable energy technologies, and low-carbon solutions.
