Public ports: 44.63 million tons of cargo in August (Vanessa Rodrigues/Archive AT) The handling of sugar and fertilizers in Brazilian ports set records in August, reaching 4 million and 4.65 million tons, respectively. Compared to the same period last year, sugar experienced a growth of 33.19%, while fertilizers saw an increase of 28.97% for the month. The data comes from the Aquatic Statistics of the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (Antaq), released last week. During the month, 119.37 million tons of cargo were handled in the ports. In the same period of 2023, the handling reached 120.20 million tons. Year-to-date, the increase in cargo handling was 3.41% (885 million) compared to the first eight months of 2023. Containers Container handling also reached its highest level for an August, with 13.16 million tons, a 12.68% increase compared to the same period last year, representing 1.21 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). Only public ports handled 44.63 million tons of cargo in August 2024. This figure represents a 9% increase compared to the same period last year.
