The Suape Complex, in Pernambuco, remains the sixth busiest public port in Brazil (Disclosure/Suape) The increase in port operations boosted cargo handling at the Port of Suape, located in Pernambuco, by 5.2% between January and October this year, compared to the same period last year. The total reached 20.9 million tons. The number of dockings also rose, with a 10% increase (1,381 vessels). With this performance, Suape retains its position as the sixth busiest public port in Brazil. These figures were released last week. According to the Statistical Yearbook of the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), containerized cargo operations showed the highest growth compared to last year, with a 23% increase, totaling 528,258 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) during this period. This is due to the fact that the Port of Suape serves as a stopover on the trade route between Singapore and the Northeast region of Brazil, including stops at port complexes in China, the Caribbean, and other regional ports. The route is operated by MSC. “Suape positions itself as the gateway for long-haul container traffic in the region, bringing greater competitiveness to exporters and importers. This is a significant achievement for Pernambuco, and the outlook is very positive with improvements to our infrastructure, such as dredging works and the restoration of the breakwater”, said the CEO of the state-owned port authority, Marcio Guiot. Meanwhile, breakbulk cargo handling increased by 13.9%, reaching a total of 492,208 tons. This segment includes bagged sugar, steel sheets and coils, vehicles, wind turbines, steel rebar and billets, as well as large industrial components. For instance, the vehicle hub moved 66,874 units during this period, with notable contributions from BYD, the Chinese giant in electric and hybrid vehicles. Liquid bulk operations (oil and derivatives) remained stable between January and October this year, with a slight decrease compared to 2023 (-0.7%).
