The loading capacity of bulk cargo ships will increase by approximately two thousand tons for both unloading and loading (José Fernando Ogura/AEN) The operational capacity of the Port of Paranaguá, in Paraná, will expand with a 30-centimeter increase in depth, reaching 13.10 meters in several areas of Paranaguá Bay. This change will boost the loading capacity of bulk cargo ships by approximately two thousand tons for both unloading and loading operations. The information comes from Portos do Paraná, which manages the place. The updated depth became effective at the end of November and was published under Ordinance No. 306/2024 of the Maritime Traffic and Stay Regulation for the Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina – 2024 Edition. “This operational achievement was only possible thanks to the completion of the dredging works and the joint efforts of Portos do Paraná, the Brazilian Navy through the Paraná Port Authority, the local Pilots Association, and the broader port community”, highlighted Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná. According to him, the measure enhances operational safety and increases productivity, particularly in soybean exports and fertilizer imports. By removing part of a submerged rock, the passage between the access channel to the port and the turning basin was improved, ensuring safer navigation and reducing maneuvering risks. In addition to the increased depth, the restriction on tide dependency has been lifted, allowing navigation at 13.10 meters during zero tide. This change significantly extends navigation windows at Portos do Paraná. In total, 11 berths and two piers benefited from the increased draft. The dredging project, completed in November this year, involved the removal of the tip of a submerged rocky mass in the Port of Paranaguá's maneuvering area, known as Rock of Palangana. This obstacle, considered hazardous for navigation, previously limited ship capacity and traffic at the bay's entrance.
