Asset recovers after the calamity caused by heavy rains in RS (Portos RS) The Port of Rio Grande, located in Rio Grande do Sul, reached in November this year its highest cargo handling volume for the month in the last ten years: 4.14 million tons. This represents a 117% growth compared to November 2014, when 1.909 million tons were handled. The main origins of imports during this period were China, with 1,357,468 tons; Argentina, with 1,726,589 tons; the United States, with 857,539 tons; and Russia, with 659,456 tons. “This result reflects all the recovery efforts in Rio Grande do Sul following the calamity (flooding and destruction caused by heavy rains earlier this year). Moreover, it demonstrates the consolidation of Portos RS as a logistical hub”, emphasized Cristiano Klinger, president of Portos RS, which manages the State's ports. Among the most handled types of cargo were soybean, soybean meal, cellulose, and potassium chloride, reinforcing the role of the Port of Rio Grande as one of the main logistical hubs for the export of commodities and essential products for the national economy. “This result is yet another demonstration of how the State is working to recover; it is a historic achievement. Port of Rio Grande, alongside Port of Pelotas and Porto Alegre, plays a strategic role in the economy of Rio Grande do Sul”, stated Juvir Costella, the State Secretary of Logistics and Transport. In a statement, Portos RS highlighted that the record-breaking November figures underline “the efficiency of port operations and Portos RS's ongoing commitment to optimizing infrastructure and attracting new demands.” The statement also noted that this performance reinforces Port of Rio Grande's position as a strategic axis for foreign trade.
