In focus: the logistic engine of the San Francisco Bay

While San Francisco shines under the spotlight of tourism and Silicon Valley leads global technological innovation, Oakland plays an essential backstage role: it is the logistic engine of the San Francisco Bay and one of the main transportation and trade centers on the U.S. West Coast. With a population of approximately 430,000 inhabitants, Oakland is the third-largest city in Northern California and plays a vital role in the local economy. Yesterday, it was visited by the Missão Internacional Porto & Mar 2025, organized by Grupo Tribuna.

The Port of Oakland, one of the busiest in the United States, is a key player in international trade, especially with Asia, as the Brazilian delegation witnessed during their morning visit yesterday. Furthermore, its infrastructure has been undergoing modernization to meet the demands of e-commerce and the growing automation of port operations.

Despite its strong industrial and port identity, Oakland does not live in the shadow of its neighbors. The city has a vibrant personality, marked by a lively cultural scene, historic neighborhoods, and a cost of living that, although still high, is more affordable than in San Francisco and the core of Silicon Valley. It also hosts technology companies that have chosen to escape the exorbitant prices on the other side of the bay.

Historically, Oakland was one of the birthplaces of the civil rights movement and the fight for social justice in the United States. In the 1960s, it was home to the Black Panther Party, one of the most important groups resisting racial inequality. This spirit of activism remains alive and is reflected in the city’s cultural diversity and the social engagement of its residents.

For visitors, the city offers attractions far beyond the port. Lake Merritt, an urban lake surrounded by trails and green spaces, is one of the most pleasant spots for outdoor activities. Meanwhile, Jack London Square, a waterfront area filled with restaurants, cafés, and shops, honors the writer Jack London, who grew up in the city and became one of the most influential American authors.

Another highlight is the Oakland Museum of California, which combines art, history, and science to tell the state’s story in a dynamic and interactive way. For sports enthusiasts, Oakland has a tradition in baseball and basketball, although it recently lost the Golden State Warriors, which relocated to San Francisco.

In gastronomy, the city is a multicultural paradise. The presence of Latino, Asian, and African communities results in a wide variety of flavors.

Clean energy The goal of zero carbon emissions at the Port of Oakland by 2030 has guided the decisions and investments of the managers of this Californian logistics complex in recent years. One measure that impressed the Brazilian delegation during yesterday’s visit was the adoption of electric trucks for port traffic, with a yard where they can be recharged between operations. The complex also features a hydrogen truck refueling station. The inauguration of this facility last year made headlines worldwide. The company operating the station is True Zero, which runs several other units across California. It is estimated that a truck can have a full tank in less than 10 minutes. One of the challenges for widespread adoption of hydrogen as fuel is its high cost.
