The deployment of the Armed Forces for the Guarantee of Law and Order (GLO) in ports and airports of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo was terminated this Tuesday (4th) by the Federal Government. The measure has been in effect since November 6th of last year and involves a contingent of 3,700 military personnel directly engaged in public security, against organized crime. As the deadline was six months, it would have ended on May 3rd, but it was extended. The main objective of the Federal Government in declaring the GLO in November (decree no. 11,765) was to ensure "the preservation of public order". In addition to the Navy, Army and Air Force, the National Security Force, the Federal Police (PF), the Federal Highway Police (PRF) and the Federal Revenue also participated in GLO actions. "The Federal Government will continue to support the integrated actions of Brazil's security forces in states against organized crime. In the assessment of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the knowledge generated and the intelligence actions developed and improved represent a legacy to the management of public security in the country and, especially, to Brazilian citizens", said the Ministry of Justice and Public Security in a statement. According to the information released, between November 1st, 2023, and June 3rd, 2024, 279.8 tons of drugs were seized in the operation, including 20.5 tons of cocaine and 18.1 tons of cocaine base paste, 317 weapons, including 32 rifles, 11.8 thousand rounds of ammunition, including 10 grenades. In addition, 3,826 people were arrested, 505.7 thousand vehicles were searched and 11.9 thousand inspections were conducted on boats.
